NORFOLK, Va. -
Gian Heyer won the clinching match and
Dusty Nelson continued his unbeaten weekend as Christopher Newport's men's tennis team defeated Norfolk State 5-2 Saturday afternoon on Old Dominion's indoor courts.
It was the second victory in two days for CNU (3-0) against a Division I opponent. Captains coach
Rush Cole said those were the first two triumphs against D-I foes in his tenure, now in its 14th year.
CNU began the match with an advantage because NSU lacked the necessary six players. The Spartans defaulted the third doubles match, and Nelson and
Eric Shulman won 8-2 to clinch the doubles point -- since NSU officially was the home team, the match was played under Division I rules.
Arsenio Culver, the Spartans' All-MEAC candidate, and British left-hander
Ben Marks rallied from 4-2 behind to defeat Heyer and
Lorenzo Sison 8-4 at the top doubles position.
In singles, CNU received a default at No. 6 to go ahead 2-0. Nelson won 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth spot, then Heyer pulled through 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 for the clinching fourth team point.
Sison also won, though No. 2
Garrett Widing and No. 1 Shulman fell in straight sets. Shulman dropped a crowd-pleasing 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 match to Culver to close the afternoon.
The Captains face even tougher Division I competition on Sunday at ODU. They meet the Richmond Spiders at 9 a.m., then face the host Monarchs at about 5 p.m.
