Football Captains Return Home for Family Weekend Showdown With Averett

CNU hosts USA South action at 1 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Family Weekend is here at Christopher Newport University as the Captains (1-3, 1-0) play host to the Averett Cougars (3-1, 1-0). The USA South game will kick off at 1 pm on Saturday at POMOCO Stadium.

This week's game is the 99th in the history of CNU football, and the Captains have posted an overall record of 63-35 for a .643 winning percentage. CNU is 33-14 (.702) all-time at POMOCO Stadium entering Saturday's tilt.

The Captains and Cougars are meeting for the 10th time, with CNU holding an 8-1 lead in the all-time series. CNU has won four straight over the Cougars and have never lost to Averett at home.

Last week, the Captains earned their first win of the season, dropping the Shenandoah Hornets ont he road, 28-13. Senior quarterback Matt Long threw for a career-high 207 yards and tossed a pair of TDs to senior T.J. Foster, who posted his third straight 100-yard receiving game.

Averett has won three straight games and feature a high-powered offense, averaging 36 points per game. Senior running back James Wilson is averaging 91 yards per game, 5.6 yards per carry and has scored seven times.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 pm. Fans can also listen to the game live on Captains Sports Live (www.CNUsports.com).
