FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The #1 Captains of Christopher Newport (13-1-0, 3-1-0) got back on track today, with a 2-0 shutout on the road of Methodist University (8-7-0, 1-2-0) in USA South action. CNU posted its ninth shutout of the year in the victory, as sophomore forward
Andrew Bonorden scored his third gamewinner of the year.
The Captains scored back-to-back goals in the second half, as Bonorden's strike came in the 66th minute, almost immediately followed by
Sam Venker's in the 70th minute.
Bonorden's goal came on a counter attack as
Danny Franklin sent a long pass from the right side to Bonorden, who buried a shot into the right corner of the goal. Just minutes later, Venker got a pass from
Steven Farmer and found the far post from the left side of the field.
The top-ranked Captains outshot Methodist, 14-4, in the game. CNU put six shots on-frame, led by Bonorden with two. Junior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe played the full ninety for his seventh solo shutout of the year, making two saves in the victory.
Methodist got one shot on goal each from Shane Davis and Clayton Newton.
CNU returns to action tomorrow, as they play in a make-up contest at Virginia Wesleyan College. The teams will battle it out in Virginia Beach at 6 pm to make up for a game that was rained out last week.
