Captains Play NC Wesleyan Saturday in 100th Game in Program History

CNU faces preseason favorites in Rocky Mount at 1:00 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport football team (1-4, 1-1) will head down to Rocky Mount, N.C. for a tough conference game tomorrow, as they face off against defending champion N.C. Wesleyan (3-2, 2-0) at 1 pm. The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 pm. Fans can also listen to the game live on Captains Sports Live (www.CNUsports.com).

This week's game is the 100th in CNU Football history, and the Captains have posted a 63-36 mark overall heading into the game. CNU has also posted a 49-12 (.803) mark in conference games, including 24 wins away from home.

The Captains and Bishops are meeting for the seventh time, with the series deadlocked at 3-3. Last year at POMOCO Stadium, the Bishops defeated the Captains, 35-7. Two seasons ago in Rocky Mount, the Captains prevailed, 27-26. CNU is 2-1 all-time playing in Rocky Mount.

North Carolina Wesleyan is 2-0 in the USA South and 3-2 overall. NCWC has won its last three games after
opening the season 0-2. Mark Henninger's squad is coming off a 48-12 home win over Greensboro last Saturday. Senior wide receiver Teron Bush, a Newport News native, has rushed for six scores this year and is averaging 30 yards rushing and 51 yards receiving per game. Freshman quarterback Jordan Vann is throwing for 193 yards per game and has completed almost 60 percent of his passes. Vann has run for two scores and also thrown a TD pass. Sophomore tailback Jamal Smith, this week's USA South Offensive Player of the Week, is averaging 64 yards per game rushing and has scored four times.

CNU is coming off a hard-fought home loss against Averett University last week. The Captains have been led by senior wide out T.J. Fosteraveraging over 117 yards per game receiving with five touchdowns so far. Senior quarterback Matt Long is averaging 131 yards in the air on 41-85 passing with five TDs. Defensively, senior Ryan Wever is coming off a great game, with 13 tackles and a pick. Wever is third on the team in tackles this season with 35, while senior Adrin Diggs and junior Mike King lead the way with 42 and 39 respectively.
