NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport got goals from six different players en route to a 6-1 win over Bethany (W.Va.) Friday night in the first round of the VCAM/CNU Classic men's soccer tournament.
Clif Kipper got the Captains on the board quickly when he netted a penalty kick less than one minute into the game. The Captains then added three more goals, by Joseph O'Donnell, Karl Kummer and Kyle Rose, to grab a 4-0 halftime lead. CNU out-shot the Bisons, 20-1, in the opening 45 minutes.
Bethany scored in the 56th minute on a penalty kick by Cameron Ward, but then Winston Mattheisen and Michael Zimmerman each found the net for the final, 6-1, score.
O'Connell, Zimmerman and Andrew Bonorden each had assists.
CNU finished the game with a 34-3 advantage in shots.
The Captains, now 2-0, meet Kean, which tied Virginia Wesleyan, 0-0 in Friday's first game in double overtime, in Saturday's 7:30 contest. Bethany, which is 0-2, meets Virginia Wesleyan at 5:00.
