Box Score

SALISBURY, MD – Christopher Newport softball player Taylor Morgan, the USA South Player of the Year, singled in the seventh to give the Captains a 3-2 lead and they held on for the win over Bridgewater on day one of the NCAA Regionals Thursday.

With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh, the first two Captains batters failed to reach base. With two outs, Mary Kennedy singled and advanced to second on Katie Moyers' single. Morgan came thru with the clutch hit when she singled up the middle, scoring Kennedy with the go ahead run.

In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles doubled to start, but Lindsay Kelly maintained her prowess and got the next batter to fly out. On the fly out, Bridgewater's runner was ruled out for leaving second base too early. After a walk, Kelly recorded the final out on a ground out.

Bridgewater wasted no time in getting on the board as they scored twice in the bottom of the first. Christopher Newport countered with two runs in the top of the second to tie the score at 2-2.

Kennedy finished 2-for-4. Moyers, Morgan, Jessie Atkinson, Renee Ashworth, and Kristin Nickloy all had one hit for the Captains.

Lindsay Kelly tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out three. She's now 13-4 on the year.

The Eagles fall to 33-10 while CNU improves to 36-7. The win ties the school record for wins in a season set in 2004. CNU returns to action Friday when they will take an undetermined opponent at 2 pm.
