Box Score 2 FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's softball squad swept a pair of games from Ferrum Sunday and clinched at least a share of the USA South regular season title.
All the Captains need to do is split their final two regular season games at Methodist to win the title outright.
CNU defeated Ferrum, 12-0, in five innings in game one. After the two teams played to a scoreless first inning, the Captains erupted for five runs in the top of the second, two more in the third and five more in the fifth.
Katie Moyers was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Ashley Mani went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jessie Atkinson finished 3-for-4 with a home run.
Lindsay Kelly tossed all five innings, gave up three hits, walked three and struck out two for the win. She's now 10-3 on the year.
Christopher Newport won game two, 9-1, in five innings. The Captains scored twice in the second and seven more in the third. The Panthers scored their lone run in the fourth.
Atkinson went 3-for-4 with four RBI and another home run. She now has 12 home runs for the season, shattering Jennifer Nowacki's record of nine set in 2000. Megan Morris finished 2-for-3.
Kristen Rowe tossed all five innings, allowed one run on seven hits, walked two and struck out three to improve to 16-0.
FC is now 15-13 on the season and 7-5 in USA South play. CNU improves to 29-3 on the year and 15-1 in conference play.
Christopher Newport returns to action Wednesday when they head to Lynchburg with start time set for 3:30 pm.
