NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Christopher Newport softball squad swept a doubleheader Saturday at Captains Park. CNU beat Peace College by scores of 5-2 and 7-1. With the wins, the Captains jump ahead of Peace to grab sole possession of first place in the USA South.
CNU plated all five of their runs in the second inning of the opener, and held on for the 5-2 win. Lindsay Kelly went the distance to win the opener, giving up two runs on four hits, while improving to 7-3 on the season.
Kristen Rowe also went the distance to get the win in Game 2, allowing one run on three hits, and is now 12-0 on the season.
In Game 1 all nine of the CNU starters reached base at least once. Megan Morris, Taylor Morgan, and Katie Moyers lead the way with two hits each. Moyers plated two runs with a 2-RBI single that gave the Captains the lead for good.
In Game 2 CNU got their first run when Jesse Atkinson pummeled the ball to deep left-center field for her tenth homerun of the season. Atkinson would finish 2-for-3 on the day, while Moyers and Morgan each had three hits in the contest, with Morgan knocking in three runs.
The Captains now have a 21-3 overall record and lead the USA South with a 7-1 conference mark. Peace falls to 12-12 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
