NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team split a conference double-header with the Hornets of Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon.  The Captains dropped the first game 2-1, and took Game 2 by a mark of 5-1.

Lindsay Kelly (5-3) got the Game 1 start, and gave a solid performance – throwing a complete game, giving up only two runs on four hits.  Kelly was bested by SU's Katie Haskins (5-2) who also went the distance, giving up only one run.

Game 2 went to the Captains behind a strong pitching effort by Kristen Rowe (10-0).  Rowe went the full seven innings allowing one run on four hits, while striking out five.

Even though Haskins stunned the CNU batters in Game 1, there was still an offensive bright spot for the Captains in Mary Kennedy who went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Then in Game 2, the Captains got the bats going.  Six different players got hits in the game, with Jessie Atkinson and Taylor Morgan providing the RBI's.  Atkinson homered for the second day in a row, was 2-for-3 with a run scored and 3 RBI's.

With the split CNU's record moves to 17-3 overall, 3-1 in conference play.  Meanwhile the Hornets are 10-6 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

The Captains head back to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Mary Baldwin for a double-header.  First pitch is set for 2pm.
