NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team opened up conference play on Saturday, by sweeping a pair of games from the Pride of Greensboro College. CNU took the double-header by scores of 5-1 and 6-1.
Lindsay Kelly (5-2) pitched Game 1 for the Captains, throwing a complete game, giving up only one run on four hits while striking out five.
Then in the Game 2 Kristen Rowe (9-0) went five shutout innings for the win. Rowe only gave up three hits and struck out four.
Offensively, the Captains were paced by Kristin Nickloy and Jessie Atkinson. Nickloy was 2-for-3 on the day, had 3 walks, scored a run, and had 2 rbi's. Meanwhile Atkinson went 2-for-6 and provided some power on the day with a Game 2 homerun to straight-away center. Atkinson added 4 rbi's and a run scored.
The Captains offense also received a jolt from 2-hit performances by Ashley Mani, Mary Kennedy, and Taylor Morgan.
With the sweep CNU improves to 16-2 on the season, and 2-0 in USA South play. Meanwhile, the Pride fall to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
