Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball squad split a doubleheader with UVA-Wise Monday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Cavaliers took the opener, 3-1, handing CNU its first loss of the season. The Captains bounced back in a big way in the nightcap, downing the Cavs in five innings, 9-0.
UVA-Wise plated all three of its runs in the sixth inning of the opener. Ace Lauren Snead pitched a complete game, striking out nine CNU batters along the way, to earn the victory. Lindsay Kelly, who threw five scoreless innings to start the game, took the loss for CNU as the Captains stranded seven runners in the opener.
In the second game, CNU jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Captains added five more in the third inning to blow the game open. Kristen Rowe and Sarah Tipton combined on the three-hit shutout for Christopher Newport. Katie Moyers and Taylor Morgan each knocked in two runs for CNU in the nightcap.
The Captains are now 9-1 on the season and will host Salisbury Wednesday afternoon at Captains Park. The non-conference doubleheader will begin at 2 pm. UVA-Wise is now 10-4 on the season.
