Chelsie Schweers recorded her 1,000th career point as she scored 34 in CNU's win over Meredith.

Schweers Records 1,000th Point, Women's Basketball Rolls Meredith, 78-55

RALEIGH, NC – Christopher Newport women's basketball player Chelsie Schweers recorded her 1,000th career point as the Captains rolled to a 78-55 USA South win at Meredith Sunday afternoon.

Schweers becomes the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 points and the second to do it in two seasons. Linda Richardson scored 1,091 points in two seasons while playing in 53 games from 1979-81.

Schweers has played in 48 games and has now scored 1,017 points in just under two full seasons of play, which ranks her 20th all-time.

She finished 12-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the line. Jessica Moore finished with eight points, and Caitlin Falls added a season-high six in the win.

The Angels came out of the gates on fire, leading by as many as 10, 16-6, with 11:44 left in the first half. CNU went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to one, 17-16, with 9:56 left in the opener. The Captains took the lead for good, 29-28, with 5:11 left in the first half.

Christopher Newport out-scored Meredith 16-4 over the final five minutes to take a 45-32 lead into the locker room at halftime. Schweers needed 17 points coming in and scored 29 in the first half on 10-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-5 from long range and 5-of-6 from the line in the first stanza.

CNU would maintain its double digit lead in the second half, leading by as many as 24 points several times.

Meredith finished the game 19-of-47 (40%) from the field, 4-of-11 (36%) from behind the arc and 13-of-24 (54%) from the charity stripe. Brittany Cornelius led the Angels with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Captains were 21-of-65 (42%) from the floor, 8-of-12 (67%) from behind the arc and 16-of-20 (80%) from the free throw line.

The Angels fall to 5-17 overall and 1-14 in USA South play. Christopher Newport is now 15-5 overall and 10-3 in conference play. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they hit the road for NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
