RALEIGH, NC – Christopher Newport's Chelsie Schweers poured in 26 points to lead women's basketball to a 68-62 win at Peace Saturday afternoon.
The Captains came out and led by nine early, 14-5, with 14:29 left in the first half. The Pacers cut the lead to four, 22-18, with 7:20 left but CNU scored eight straight to increase its lead to 12, 30-18, with 3:15 remaining in the opening period. Christopher Newport would lead by 11, 35-24, at the break.
CNU scored the first bucket of the second half to lead by 13, its largest of the game. Peace would counter by going on a 12-2 run to cut the lead to three, 39-36, with 15:44 left in the game. Christopher Newport responded with five straight to lead by eight with 12:59 to go.
Peace would again cut into the lead and get as close as two points, 55-53, with 4:19 left in the game. Christopher Newport quickly extended its lead back to eight with two minutes to go while Peace cut it to four with 1:20 left, but that would be as close as they would get.
The Pacers finished 23-of-57 (40%) from the field, 3-of-12 (25%) from behind the arc and 13-of-20 (65%) from the free throw line. Christy Freeman finished with 18 points, Brittany Johnston had 14 points and seven rebounds and Lauren Seeger added 13 points and six boards.
The Captains were 29-of-53 (55%) from the floor, 4-of-6 (67%) from long range and 6-of-14 (43%) from the charity stripe. Schweers led CNU with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from both the free throw line and behind the arc. She also had seven rebounds. Jerlisa Bowser added 11 and Jessica Moore totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.
Peace falls to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in USA South action. Christopher Newport is now 14-5 overall and 9-3 in conference play. CNU wraps up the weekend Sunday when they travel across Raleigh to Meredith with tip-off set for 2 pm.
