NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad slipped past Shenandoah Wednesday evening by defeating the Hornets, 73-67, in overtime, in a USA South contest.
The Captains had a chance to win the game in regulation. Trailing 63-61 with 1:10 left, Chelsie Schweers forced a turnover with 42 seconds left and drove the length of the floor to tie the score at 63 with 38 seconds left.
After a Shenandoah timeout, the Hornets had two chances to re-take the lead, but missed on both attempts with the Captains getting the rebound on the second effort. Christopher Newport called a timeout with nine seconds left and the Captains Jessica Moore was wide open but missed the lay-up, forcing the extra session.
SU scored the first bucket in the extra session 45 seconds into the start of it. CNU finally tied the score with 1:48 remaining in overtime. The Hornets see-sawed back in front on the next possession, and Lauren Gural hit one of two free throws with 1:07 left to cut the lead to one.
After Shenandoah missed a jumper, Chelsie Schweers got the rebound and ran the length of the floor, made the bucket, was fouled and hit the free throw to put the Captains ahead by two. Schweers and Bowser each hit two free throws to seal the win.
The Captains came out scorching in the first half, scoring 14 of the game's 16 points in the first three and a half minutes. The Hornets stepped up their defense and got right back into the game. Trailing 20-12, SU went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for the first time, 23-22, with 4:25 to go in the opening half.
Christopher Newport battled back, out-scoring SU 11-7 in the final minutes to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the half.
For the game, Shenandoah finished 29-of-75 (39%) from the field, 2-of-11 (18%) from behind the arc and 7-of-11 (64%) from the free throw line. Mandy Johnston led SU with 16 points and nine rebounds. Stephanie Holton finished with 12 off the bench.
Christopher Newport was 26-of-65 (40%) from the field, 1-of-7 (14%) from long range and 20-of-27 (74%) from the line. Schweers led all scorers with 28 points and she tied her career-highs in rebounds (11) and steals (8). Jessica Moore added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
SU falls to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in USA South action. CNU improves to 13-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
The Captains hit the road this weekend when they take on Peace Saturday at 2 pm.
