NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball team remained atop the standings in USA South play with an 81-67 win over Shenandoah Wednesday night at the Freeman Center.
The Hornets got out to an early five point lead, 25-20, with 9:30 to go in the opening half. The Captains scored eight of the next 11 points to take a one point lead. CNU also led by one, 36-35, at the break.
CNU quickly extended its lead to seven in the second half, 50-43, with 12:00 minutes left. Two minutes later the Captains led by nine and with 8:55 remaining Christopher Newport owned an 11-point lead, 59-48.
Shenandoah went on a 12-5 run to cut the lead to four, 64-60, with 5:55 left, but that would be as close as they would get.
CNU responded by out-scoring the Hornets 15-3 over the next four minutes to lead by 16, 79-63.
SU finished the game 26-of-71 (37%) from the field, 4-of-17 (24%) from behind the arc and 11-of-13 (85%) from the free throw line. Chris Schrader led the Hornets with 18 points. Wayne Washington finished with 11 and Stevie Johns added 10.
Christopher Newport shot 31-of-63 (49%) from the floor, 8-of-21 (38%) from long range and 11-of-19 (58%) from the charity stripe. Davon Barton paced the Captains with 20 points and seven assists. Thomas Whinnett added 18 points and seven rebounds, Mike Green had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mark Blasingame added 13.
Shenandoah falls to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play. CNU is now 13-7 on the year and improves to 6-1 in conference action, remaining in first place. Christopher Newport is off for the next week and returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
