NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad rolled to a 80-48 win over Peace in a USA South Quarterfinal contest Tuesday evening in the Freeman Center.
Trailing 4-3, CNU went on a 23-2 run to take a 26-6 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first half. The Captains cruised to a 38-21 lead at the break.
The second half was all CNU as well as the Captains out-scored the Pacers, 42-27. Christopher Newport scorched the nets in the second half, shooting 58% from the field, including draining all three three-pointers it attempted.
Peace finished the game 18-of-66 (27%) from the field, 1-of-8 (13%) from behind the arc and 11-of-18 (61%) from the free throw line. LeAnne Horne led the Pacers with 17 points.
The Captains finished 29-of-56 (52%) from the floor, 6-of-9 (67%) from long range and 16-of-25 (64%) from the charity stripe. Christopher Newport was led by Chelsie Schweers 28 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-8 from long distance and 6-of-6 from the line. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Jessica Moore finished with 18 points and nine boards and Alysa Kerr had a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Peace finishes the year 11-15 overall. CNU improves to 20-6 on the year, the 11th time the Captains have won at least 20 games in a season. It's also the third straight year of at least 20 wins.
Christopher Newport will meet Ferrum in a semifinal contest on Friday, at the Freeman Center, beginning at 6 pm.
