Baseball Suffers First Loss To Marlins

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball team took on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park.  The Marlins defeated CNU by a final score of 13-2 in 8 innings.

Kyle Baumann got the start for the Captains and recorded the first out of the game on one pitch.  Unfortunately for Baumann, the one out was a come-backer that injured his hand on the play.  Baumann would exit the game and be replaced by freshman Tyler McElhenny.

McElhenny struggled, giving up 7 runs before being relieved by Justin Harrah, who recorded the final two outs of the inning; Marlins leading 7-0.

The Captains would get their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning when Parker Neal plated a run with an RBI single.  They would not score again until the 7th inning when pinch-hitter Matt McDaniel had an RBI single of his own.

The win was picked up by VWC starter Jesse Baker (3-0), while the loss is charged to McElhenny (0-1).

Neal went 2-3 on the day with an RBI, while Eric Cole also had a 2-hit day at 2-2 with 2 runs scored.

The loss is the CNU's first of the season, and drops their record to 6-1-1.  The Marlins improve to 6-3 on the year.

Christopher Newport returns home this Friday to take on Penn St.-Abington with the first pitch set for 3pm.  CNU will then open conference play this Saturday with the Panthers of Ferrum College.
