Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport baseball player Trae Bailey belted his third home run of the season, a solo walk-off shot in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Captains past Bridgewater, 8-7, Sunday afternoon.
CNU scored once in the second before the Eagles pushed across two in the top of the third. Bailey's RBI single in the fourth tied the score but Bridgewater responded with a single run in the top of the fifth to re-take the lead.
Christopher Newport scored two runs in each of the bottom of the sixth and seventh frames to take a 6-4 lead. BC scored three times in the top of the nine to lead 7-6.
The Captains tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an unearned run, sending the game into extra frames where Bailey won it in the bottom of the 10th.
Parker Neal was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Bailey went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Chris Despins finished with two hits and two runs driven in.
Jason Jenkins went 6 1/3 innings, allowed four runs on four hits, walked five and struck out seven. Chris Malvagna lasted two innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out two. Kevin Moreland picked up his first win in relief, pitching the 10th, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Bridgewater falls to 2-3 on the year while CNU is now 6-0-1. The Captains return to action Tuesday when they host cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with first pitch set for 2:30 pm.
