Women's Basketball Drops 75-73 Heartbreaking Decision To Greensboro, Will Be No. 2 Seed In Next Weeks USA South Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Jerlisa Bowser's three-pointer spun out and the Pride defeated the Captains, 75-73, Saturday evening at the Freeman Center.

Despite the loss, CNU will be the number two seed in next week's USA South Tournament as Ferrum, who was a game behind the Captains coming in, lost at NC Wesleyan, 78-71. CNU will meet Peace in a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday at a time to be determined.

CNU trailed by four at the break and the Pride quickly extended its lead to eight with 17:15 left. The Captains went on a 21-8 run to lead by five, 57-55, with 11:08 to go in the game.

GC responded with a 8-0 spurt to take the lead back by three, 60-57, with 9:14 remaining in the game. The Pride would lead by as many as five several times, the final time with 2:33 left.

Kimmy Hopkins' three-pointer with 51 seconds left cut the Greensboro lead to one and the Pride's Kim Enoch made one of two free throws with 25 seconds left, putting GC up by two, setting up Bowser's final attempt.

The Pride shot 25-of-69 (36%) from the field, 5-of-19 (26%) from behind the arc and 20-of-26 (77%) from the free throw line. Dione Eccles led six Pride players in double figures with 17 points. Danielle Duncan had 15 off the bench, Lindsay Thrift finished with 12, and Nikki Wilborn and Kim Enoch finished with 10 a piece.

Christopher Newport shot 31-of-58 (53%) from the floor, 3-of-10 (30%) from long range and 8-of-13 (62%) from the charity stripe. Chelsie Schweers led all scorers with 29 points on 14-of-23 shooting. She also had eight rebounds and six steals. Hopkins added 17 points and Bowser added 11 off the bench.

Greensboro completes the regular season 24-1 overall and a perfect 18-0 in USA South play. The Captains finish the regular season 19-6 overall and 14-4 in conference action.
