NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball team took on the Profs of Rowan for the second game of a two-day, two-game set on Saturday. The Captains defeated the Profs in comeback fashion, winning by a final score of 17-10.
CNU Senior Kyle Baumann got his second start of the season and went 1 2/3 innings before Ian Lenda took over in the top of the 2nd inning and would throw all the way into the 7th inning.
Rowan wasted no time in getting some offensive production as they got on the board early, putting up 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning. All four runs would come with one swing of the bat when right-fielder John McMullin hit a grand slam over the left-center field fence.
Rowan would add two more runs off of Baumann in the top of the 2nd before Lenda came in to record the final out of the inning with the Profs jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
The Captains would answer in the bottom of the 2nd inning where a lead off walk to Chris Despins set up a 2-run home run by Eric Cole, marking Cole's second homer in as many days. Before the inning ended, CNU would tack on one more run on a Mike Giarrizzi RBI single; cutting the Profs lead in half, making it 6-3.
The CNU offense would continue to chip away at the Rowan pitching in the bottom of the 4th inning where they loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Chris Despins would hit a sacrifice fly to right field bringing the game closer at a mark of 6-4.
After Rowan put up one more run in the top of the 5th, CNU would come to the plate in the bottom of the inning with an answer. The Captains loaded the bases on three singles, and with one out Zach Hutchison would poke an RBI single to right. Then Trae Bailey came to the plate and laced an opposite field single that would plate two runs, tying the game at 7-7. Christopher Newport would then take their first lead of the day when Cole's sacrifice fly to center field brought home Hutchison to make the score 8-7.
CNU followed up a 4-run 5th inning with another big showing in the bottom of the 6th. The Captains benefited from 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 errors to plate 7 runs off of Rowan pitcher Jay Gallen. Tom Ready would come in to relieve Gallen and record the final out of the inning with the Captains leading 15-7.
In the top of the 7th inning Rowan would plate 2 more runs off of Lenda, before junior Chris Malvagna came in to record the final two outs and get the Captains out of the inning with a lead of 15-9.
Giarrizzi would came on to pitch a quick 8th inning, followed by Kevin Moreland who would pitch the 9th and seal the victory for the Captains.
The Captains were lead offensively by Cole who went 3-5 with 4 runs batted in, 2 runs scored, and a homerun. Also adding multi-hit days were Giarrizzi, Hutchison, Steven Lindemuth, and Parker Neal.
The win is picked up by Lenda (2-0) and the loss is charged to Carl Taylor (0-1). With the win CNU improves to 5-0-1 on the year, while Rowan falls to 0-1-1.
The Captains will be back out on their home field Sunday afternoon to take on the Eagles of Bridgewater College at 1:00pm.
