NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad defeated Methodist, 54-43, Friday night at the Freeman Center
CNU began the game on a 20-10 run to lead by 10 with 9:42 left. Less than a minute later, the Captains extended it to 13 with 8:58 left in the half. The Monarchs whittled the lead down to eight on Zan Messer's three-pointer with five seconds left in the half, making the score 29-21.
Chelsie Schweers came out and scored seven of the first nine points in the second half to put CNU up 11, 38-27, with 15:40 left in the game. MU scored five straight to cut the lead to six, but that would be as close as they Monarchs would get. Christopher Newport led by as many as 15, 52-37, with 4:18 left in the game.
Methodist finished 17-of-49 (35%) from the field, 6-of-19 (32%) on three-point attempts and 3-of-9 (33%) from the free throw line. Michaela Myers paced MU with 11 points off the bench.
The Captains were 21-of-53 (40%) from the floor, 3-of-5 (60%) from long range and 9-of-15 (60%) from the stripe. Schweers led all scorers with 22 points. Jessica Moore added 13 and five rebounds.
MU falls to 15-9 on the year and 10-7 in conference play. CNU improves to 19-5 overall and 14-3 in USA South action. Christopher Newport concludes the regular season Saturday when they host Greensboro at 4 pm.
