FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's Jerlisa Bowser was at the right place at the right time as her put-back with 0.2 seconds left lifted the Captains to a hard-earned 77-76 USA South win at Ferrum Sunday afternoon.
Just seconds before, Tonya Wright gave the Panthers a one point lead as she dribbled around the CNU defense to put Ferrum up 76-75. The Captains called a timeout with six seconds remaining and Chelsie Schweers drove the lane and her shot was short and the rebound fell right to Bowser whose bucket lifted Christopher Newport to the win.
The Panthers led by as many as 10 points in the second half, 61-51m with 11:43 left in the game. A 12-4 CNU run cut the lead to two, 65-63, with 5:38 to go. CNU tied the score at 72-all with 2:44 remaining in the game.
Lauren Gural made one of two free throws with 2:40 to go to put the Captains ahead by one. Ferrum see-sawed back in front on Caprice Laws bucket with 2:11 left. Schweers tip the scales in Christopher Newport's favor with 1:54 left, setting up the final minute of the game.
Ferrum finished 30-of-64 (47%) from the field, 9-of-27 (33%) from behind the arc and 7-of-10 (70%) from the charity stripe. Ashley Norton led FC with 21 points. Miranda Carrasco added 20 points. Laws totaled 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Tonya Wright finished with 11.
The Captains were 29-of-62 (47%) from the floor, 8-of-16 (50%) from long range and 11-of-16 (69%) from the free throw line. Chelsie Schweers led all scorers with 30 points and she also had eight rebounds and six assists. Kimmy Hopkins totaled 16 points, Alysa Kerr had 11 and eight rebounds off the bench and Jessica Moore also had 11.
Ferrum falls to 16-7 overall and 12-4 in USA South play. Christopher Newport is now 18-5 overall and 13-3 in conference action. CNU returns home Friday when they host Methodist with tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
