FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad came from five down at halftime to defeat Ferrum, 67-59, in a USA South contest Sunday evening.
The Captains trailed by as many as 14 early in the second half, 22-8, with 11:38 to go but knocked the lead down to five at the break, 36-31, on Davon Barton's three-pointer with six seconds left.
CNU scored the first 10 points of the second half and held the Panthers scoreless for the first seven minutes to lead by five with 13:17 left.
Christopher Newport kept adding to its lead, leading by as many as 11, 55-44, with 5:01 left in the game. A 10-3 run by Ferrum cut CNU's lead to four, 58-54, with 2:23 left in the game. The Captains made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
FC finished 19-of-61 (31%) from the field, 1-of-15 (7%) from behind the arc and 20-of-29 (69%) from the line. Keith Crump paced the Panthers with 21 points. Derek Mitchell added 16 points and 21 rebounds. Marcus Mayo added 12 off the bench.
CNU was 20-of-56 (36%) from the floor, 5-of-14 (36%) from long range and 22-of-24 (92%) from the free throw line. Barton led the Captains with 15 points. Thomas Whinnett finished with 12, Mike Green added 10 and Brian Hermann totaled 10 off the bench.
The Captains improve to 15-8 overall and 8-2 in the USA South. The Panthers fall to 13-11 on the year and 6-5 in conference play. CNU returns home Friday as they host Methodist at 7:30 pm.
