Box Score 2  NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Mike Giarrizzi had three hits and three RBIs and Trae Bailey two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, to help lift Christopher Newport to a doubleheader sweep of Gwynedd Mercy, 10-5 and 6-4, and improve its season-opening record to 4-0.

Giarrizzi wound up with two hits in the game, including a double, and scored three runs. Joey Martin added two hits and an RBI and Ben Lenda had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two walks.
After Gwynedd Mercy scored twice in the top of the fifth, Lenda's two-run single put the Captains on top, 3-2. The Griffins regained the lead, 5-3 in the second, but a run-scoring single by Giarrizzi, and a sacrifice fly by Bailey tied the game at five. Giarrizzi, Martin and Bailey all drew bases-loaded walks in the fifth to account for the final score.

The Captains scored three in the third when Travis Medina led off with a home run and Steven Lindenmuth hit a two-run single.
The Griffins tallied twice in the fourth, but CNU countered with an RBI single by Bailey in the bottom of the inning. GMC tied it with two in the fifth before Giarrizzi put CNU on top to stay with a two-run single immediately afterward.
Ian Lenda got his first win in two years, after sitting out 2008 with an injury, pitching in relief and Kevin Moreland picked up his first save.
