DANVILLE, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad defeated Averett, 67-56 Saturday afternoon in a USA South contest.
With the win, CNU Head Coach Carolyn Hunter picked up win No. 200, becoming the first coach in program history to reach the 200-win plateau. She's in her 11th season and is 200-96 (.676).
The Captains got out to a hot start, scoring on their first four possessions to lead 9-2 with 17:56 remaining in the opening half. CNU then went on a 16-9 run to lead by 16, 27-11, with 9:19 left in the first half.
The Cougars cut the CNU lead to as few as 10 in the first half, but trailed by 13, 40-27, at the break.
In the second half, Averett suffered an eight minute drought where they scored just two points to the Captains 12, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
AU shot 20-of-59 (34%) from the field, 7-of-18 (39%) from behind the arc and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line. The Cougars were led by Liz Martin's 14 points and Taylor Poirier finished with 11.
Christopher Newport was 27-of-53 (51%) from the floor, 3-of-7 (43%) from behind the arc and 10-of-13 (77%) from the line. Chelsie Schweers led CNU with 17 points and six steals. Jessica Moore finished with 13 points, Kimmy Hopkins added 11 and Alysa Kerr finished with 10.
AU falls to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in USA South play. CNU is now 17-5 overall and 12-3 in conference action. The Captains will meet Ferrum Sunday with tip-off set for 2 pm.
