Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad won its second straight to open the 2009 season Saturday by defeating No. 14 Lynchburg, 6-5, in 11 innings.
Travis Medina opened the 11th with a single, and advanced to second on Mike Giarrizzi's sacrifice bunt. Medina came around to score when Zach Hutchison reached on an error for the game-winner.
The Hornets got on the board first with single runs in the second and third.
CNU wasted no time in taking the lead with three in the third. Medina doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Giarrizzi's single. Medina scored on Hutchison's RBI ground out. Trae Bailey doubled scoring Giarrizzi and David Fennessey followed with an RBI single to put the Captains up 3-2.
Lynchburg tied the score in the fifth and Christopher Newport re-took the lead, 5-3, on Bailey's two-run home run in the seventh. The Hornets scored twice in the top of the eighth to force the extra frames.
Kyle Baumann started, going five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Tyler McElhenny tossed 2 1/3 innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out two. Kevin Moreland lasted 2 2/3 innings, gave up two hits and struck out three. Giarrizzi tossed a perfect 11th, striking out two, picking up the win.
Bailey finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Hutchison finished 2-for-4
LC falls to 2-2 on the year while CNU is now 2-0. The Captains return to action Sunday as they host Gwynedd-Mercy with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 11 am.
