Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad grouped ten runs in the middle innings and scored an 11-4 win over Hampden-Sydney in the baseball opener for the Captains Thursday.
After the Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on three straight singles, Eric Cole tied it in the second with a home run down the right field line.
CNU then scored four times in the fourth, added another in the fifth and scored five times in the sixth inning.
Mike Giarrizzi had a double and a triple, and freshman Connor Madden, Cole and Parker Neal each had two hits.
Josh Brinkman got the victory, going five innings, allowing one run on four hits, three in the first. He had six strikeouts.
Hampden-Sydney falls to 2-1, while the Captains are 1-0 heading into a Saturday meeting with Lynchburg at Captains Park at 11 a.m.
