Women's Basketball Upends NC Wesleyan, 75-61

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad won its fourth straight Wednesday evening by dispatching NC Wesleyan, 75-61, in a USA South contest.

The two teams played even through the first five minutes as the Captains led, 7-6. CNU scored six of the next eight points to lead by five, 13-8. It wasn't until 6:35 left in the opening half, Christopher Newport took a double digit lead, leading by 10, 31-21. CNU out-scored the Bishops, 10-6 over the final 5:43 to lead 41-27 at the break.

The Captains maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 18 points several times. The Bishops cut the lead to as few as 11, but by that time, there was only two minutes left in the game.

NC Wesleyan finished 24-of-66 (36%) from the field, 4-of-16 (25%) from long range and 9-of-14 (64%) from the free throw line. Essence Chambers led all scorers with a career-high 32 points on 13-of-28 shooting, including 2-of-6 from behind the arc and 4-of-7 from the line. She also had six steals, four rebounds and four assists. Meredith Mills finished with nine points.

The Captains were 28-of-50 (56%) from the floor, 3-of-8 (38%) on three-point attempts, and 16-of-23 (70%) from the stripe. Chelsie Schweers paced Christopher Newport with 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the line. She also had a game-high eight rebounds. Jessica Moore finished with nine.

NC Wesleyan falls to 5-16 overall and 3-11 in USA South play. CNU improves to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in conference action.

The Captains return to the hard-court Saturday when they head to Averett with tip-off set for 2 pm.
