NEW YORK, N.Y. - The CNU volleyball team punched its ticket to the Elite 8 with a thrilling, 3-2, victory over Salisbury Saturday night. The Captains overcame a 2-0 set deficit to take the win, capturing the New York Regional championship.
CNU will face Wisconsin-Oshkosh Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Captains found themselves down two sets to nothing after falling, 25-23 and 25-20. In the first CNU led, 21-18, but was unable to stop the Seagulls; rally. In the second set Salisbury jumped to an 8-1 lead and then held off the Captains, who fought back to within three at 23-20.
But the entire complexion of the match changed in the third set. With the set tied at 10 CNU went on a 5-1 run with the help of a service ace by
Chelsea McClure, who put CNU on top to stay, a kill by
Jessie Heavenrich and two by
Cory Harris. The Seagulls closed the gap to 24-22, but the tournament's Most Outstanding Player,
Caitlyn Jansen, finished it off.
The fourth set was all CNUith the Captains jumping to a 20-11 lead and coasting home, 25-13.
In the fifth, set a kill by Harris broke a 2-2 tie and ignited a 10-2 run by CNU which put the Captains on top, 12-4. An attack error by the Seagulls finished the regional championship for CNU, 15-6..
Harris led CNU with 20 kills, while Jansen had 15 and
Kara Elder 11.
Abby Hogge hauled in 27 digs and Elder added 15 with Harris and Heavenrich each chipping in with 11. Heavenrich also contributed 51 assists and McClure had four service aces.
Joining Jansen on the all-tournament team were Harris and Hogge.
The loss ended Salisbury's season at 32-5, with two of the losses coming at the hands of the Captains.
CNU is now 36-6.
