Football Falls to Methodist, 10-9

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The 2009 football season came to an end Saturday afternoon for the Captains of Christopher Newport. CNU lost at Methodist, 10-9, to finish at 5-5 and
4-3 in the USA South.

CNU pulled to within a point with 2:22 to play when sophomore quarterback Mike Schoeffel hit senior wide receiver Tony Spradlin with a 17-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore kicker Matthew Bourne then had his extra point attempt blocked by Methodist's Anthony Cassone to preserve the win for the Monarchs.

"I'd like to think the game didn't come down to an extra point," head coach Matt Kelchner said after the game. "We committed so many mistakes and penalties it just shouldn't come down to that. I give Methodist a lot of credit, they played hard and did enough to win the game."

Schoeffel, who played the entire game due to injuries to three other quarterbacks, completed 10 of 21 passes on the day for 92 yards. It was his first start ever for the Captains.

Senior running back Tunde Ogun finished with 122 yards rushing in his final game as a Captain. Ogun's spectacular career ended with 38 career scores in 28 games, and a career total of 3,435 yards. It was the 16th time in 28 games he surpassed the 100-yard mark.

Sophomore Corey Legister ran for 77 yards for CNU.

The Captains were hurt by 10 penalties for 103 yards in the game.

Methodist concludes the season with a 3-7 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the USA South.
