Men's Basketball Dumps Greensboro, 72-67

GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad held off a late rally to defeat Greensboro College Saturday evening, 72-67.

CNU got off to a hot start, scoring 11 of the game's first 15 points. The Captains largest lead came at the break, 11, 37-26. Christopher Newport scored the final four points of the half in the final two minutes to take the lead into the locker room.

The Captains wasted no time increasing its lead to 15 in the second half. CNU went on a 10-0 run over the course of two and a half minutes to lead 47-32 with 16:09 to go in the game. Two minutes later, Christopher Newport added to its lead, 17, with 14:14 left, the largest of the game.

The Pride however would not give up. They kept chipping away and eventually got it down to three, 69-66, with 49 seconds remaining after on Michael McDuffie's steal and ensuing lay-up.

Mike Green answered with a foul line jumper of his own on the next possession, putting the Captains up by five with 30 seconds to go that sealed the win for Christopher Newport.

The Pride shot 26-of-63 (41%) from the field, 1-of-14 (7%) from behind the arc and 14-of-22 (64%) from the charity stripe. Adam Powell led GC with 18 points. Walter Brady finished with 13 points and 12 boards while McDuffie and Anthony Simmons each finished with 11.

CNU was led by Green's 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Mark Blasingame added 16 points and 10 boards while Thomas Whinnett (12) and Davon Barton (10) each finished in double figures.

Greensboro falls to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in USA South play. The Captains, who have now won five in a row and eight of their last nine, are 12-6 overall and 5-0 in conference play. CNU concludes the weekend trip Sunday as they take on Methodist at 4 pm.
