Men's Basketball Holds Off Ferrum, 82-73

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men' s basketball squad remained undefeated in USA South play with an 82-73 win over Ferrum Sunday evening.

Trailing 9-8, the Captains scored seven of the next 13 points to lead by one, 15-14, with 11:49 to play in the opening half. CNU held the Panthers scoreless for three minutes and in the process, extended its one point lead to eight, with 8:45 remaining.

The Captains largest lead in the opening half would come with 3:04 left when they led by 10, 34-24, on Mike Green's lay-up. Christopher Newport would lead by seven, 39-32, at the break.

In the second half, CNU got the lead up to as many as 20 several times, with the final time coming with 8:01 left in the game. The Panthers would not go quietly as they forced several turnovers and bad shots. The closest Ferrum would come would be eight points, 77-69, with 35 seconds left.

FC shot 26-of-70 (37%) from the field, 5-of-20 (25%) from behind the arc and 16-of-21 (76%) from the free throw line. Keith Crump led Ferrum with 21 points. Derek Mitchell added 15 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.  Jerrell Wade had 12 points and Marcus Mayo finished with 11.

Christopher Newport shot 29-of-60 (48%) from the floor, 4-of-10 (40%) from long range and 20-of-27 (74%) from the charity stripe. For the second game in a row, the Captains were led by Davon Barton who had 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Green finished with 20 points and eight boards while Thomas Whinnett totaled 16 points and six rebounds. Mark Blasingame had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Ferrum falls to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in USA South action. CNU improves to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Christopher Newport is off until next Saturday when they travel to Greensboro with tip-off set for 4 pm.
