Women's Basketball Drops NC Wesleyan, 75-63

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad stayed undefeated in USA South play with a 75-63 win over NC Wesleyan Wednesday.

In the opening half, the two teams volleyed for position, with NC Wesleyan taking an early 7-4 lead with 14:37 to go. The Captains out-scored the Bishops 15-5 to take a seven point lead with 7:55 left in the opening half.

Christopher Newport led by as many as eight in the first half and took a seven point lead, 33-26, at the half.

In the second half, the Captains maintained a double digit throughout the most of the half.

CNU's largest lead came with 15:13 left when they lead by 15, 48-33, on a three-point play by Kimmie Hopkins.

The Bishops shot 24-of-56 (43%) from the field, 4-of-12 (33%) from long range and 11-of-17 (65%) from the free throw line. Essence Chambers paced NC Wesleyan with 25 points. T'Keya Holloway finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Captains finished 30-of-65 (46%) from the floor, 2-of-6 (33%) from behind the arc and 13-of-15 (87%) from the charity stripe. Hopkins led the way with 23 points, five rebounds and three assists. Chelsie Schweers added 14 points, Jerlisa Bowser finished with 12 and Jessica Moore had 10.

The Bishops fall to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in USA South play. CNU improves to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in conference action.

Christopher Newport returns to action Saturday when they host Averett at 2 pm.
