NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad fended off a pesky Peace team, defeating the Pacers, 74-62, to remain undefeated in USA South play Sunday afternoon.
The game was close from start to tend, despite the 12-point win for the Captains. Peace hung tough throughout, cutting into the Captains lead several times, including taking the lead midway through the second half.
Christopher Newport's largest lead in the first half was 10 points. The Pacers trailed 25-15 with 5:03 to go and out-scored CNU 13-3 to cut the deficit to five, 33-28, at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams remained close and Peace knotted the score at 41-41 with 14:07 left in the game. Two Chelsie Schweers' free throws put the Captains back on top, but Peace scored four straight to take a 45-43 lead with 11:11 to go.
Jessica Moore tied the score up on the next possession and Peace's Christy Freeman made one of two free throws to see-saw the Pacers back on top by one.
Kimmy Hopkins' bucket with 9:46 left put Christopher Newport back on top for good.
The Captains hit their free throws in the second half, hitting 24-of-27 after going 6-of-12 in the first half.
For the game, Peace finished 20-of-62 (32%) from the field, 3-of-8 (38%) from behind the arc and 19-of-26 (73%) from the free throw line. Karrissa Herring led the Pacers with 18 points and nine rebounds. Lauren Seeger finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Captains shot 20-of-45 (44%) from the floor, 4-of-9 (44%) from long range and 30-of-39 (77%) from the free throw line. Hopkins led the Captains with a career-high 23 points. Schweers finished with 17 and Lauren Gural added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Peace falls to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in USA South play. Christopher Newport improves to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in USA South action. CNU returns to the floor Wednesday when they host NC Wesleyan beginning at 5:30 pm.
