NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad remained undefeated in USA South play with a 76-56 win over Meredith Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
The game was much closer than it appeared. The Captains got out to an early 11-point lead, 27-16, with 9:06 left in the opening half. CNU extended it to as many as 15 in the first, 35-20, with 5:07 left in the first.
The Angels would not go quietly, as they went on a 10-2 lead to cut it to seven with 3:04 remaining in the first half. The Captains closed the half on an 8-4 run to lead by 11 at the break, 45-34.
CNU dominated the second half, out-scoring Meredith by nine. The closest the Angels would get, would be seven points very early in the second half. The Captains stepped up their defense in the second half, allowing the Angels to shoot just 39% from the field, after shooting 52% in the first half.
Christopher Newport forced 24 Meredith turnovers and converted them into 28 points.
For the game, Meredith shot 20-of-44 (46%) from the field, 6-of-11 (55%) from long range and 10-of-15 (67%) from the charity stripe. Brittany Cornelius led the Angels with 19 points and five rebounds. Megan Rahn added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Captains finished 27-of-66 (41%) from the floor, 2-of-10 (20%) on three-point attempts and 20-of-24 (83%) from the free throw line. Jessica Moore led CNU with 17 points, five rebounds and four rebounds. Kimmy Hopkins added 15 points, Alysa Kerr added 10 off the bench and Lauren Gural finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Meredith falls to 4-11 overall and 0-8 in conference play. CNU is now 8-2 overall and 3-0 in USA South action. Christopher Newport returns to action Sunday when they host Peace at 2 pm.
