WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad won an ugly one Wednesday night, winning 58-41 at Shenandoah in USA South play.
The last time CNU won a game and didn't score at least 60 points was back on Nov. 25, 2006 when the Captains defeated Marymount, 54-52, at home.
Both teams struggled from the field, neither hit more than 35% of its shots.
It was a back and forth first half, with CNU leading, 25-24 at the break. The Captains trailed with less 10 seconds left when Jen Falin found a wide-open Lauren Gural for an easy lay-up with one second left in the half that put the Captains head for good.
Christopher Newport began the second half on a 12-2 run to increase its lead to 11, 37-26, with 16:36 to go on Jessica Moore's lay-up. SU whittled the lead down to four, 39-35, with 11:46 left in the game, but CNU countered with six straight to take a 10 point lead with 7:47 remaining.
Chelsie Schweers' three-pointer with 4:24 left put the game out of reach, giving the Captains a 52-39 lead.
Shenandoah finished 19-of-66 (29%) from the field, 1-of-12 (8%) from behind the arc and 2-of-6 (33%) from the line. Sierra Edwards and Mandy Johnston paced the Hornets with 10 points each. Alexis Hargbol finished with a game-high 17 rebounds.
Christopher Newport shot 24-of-68 (35%) from the floor, 3-of-12 (25%) from long range and 7-of-12 (58%) from the charity stripe. Schweers led all scorers with 16 points, she also grabbed six boards. Moore finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kimmy Hopkins had 14 points.
Shenandoah falls to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in USA South play. The Captains improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
CNU returns to the hard-court Saturday when they host Meredith at 2 pm.
