WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad opened USA South play on a positive note by coming from behind to upend Shenandoah, 57-48, Wednesday night.
The Captains and Hornets see-sawed back and forth for most of the first half until the final minute. After Brian Hermann's bucket with 1:13 left, Nick Brown hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 42 seconds to put Shenandoah on top at the break, 32-28.
In the second, Shenandoah went up six early, but the Captains went on a run, out-scoring SU, 7-0, to take a one-point lead. The teams see-sawed back and forth once again, until mid-way through the second half.
Trailing 40-39 with 9:47 remaining, the Captains went on a 13-2 run to take a 10 point lead with 2:01 to go on Davon Barton's jumper in the paint, securing the win.
SU finished 18-of-60 (30%) from the field, 5-of-20 (20%) from long range and 7-of-9 (78%) from the free throw line. Brown led the Hornets with 13 points off the bench. Kenny Robertson had 11.
The Captains were 22-of-60 (37%) from the floor and did not hit a three-pointer in the game for the first time in a very long time, as they finished 0-of-16. CNU finished 13-of-19 (68%) from the free throw line.
Mike Green scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half, while grabbing nine rebounds. Barton finished with 13 points and eight assists. Mark Blasingame had a game-high 12 rebounds while blocking four shots.
Shenandoah falls to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 1-0 in conference action.
CNU is off till next Wednesday when they host NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
