Women's Basketball Drops Mary Baldwin, 74-45

STAUNTON, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad opened USA South play on a positive note by defeating Mary Baldwin, 74-45, Saturday afternoon.

The Captains got off to a quick start, leading 34-18 at the half. CNU shot 42% in the opening stanza while limiting the Squirrels to 20% shooting.

Christopher Newport shot 53% in the second half and out-scored Mary Baldwin, 40-27. For the game, MBC finished 16-of-70 (23%) from the field, 2-of-11 (18%) from long range and 11-of-18 (61%) from the line.

Kara Hawkins paced MBC with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Christie Hamilton also scored 11 and Deja Budd added 10 points.

The Captains were 32-of-68 (47%) from the floor, 3-of-7 (43%) from behind the arc and 7-of-10 (70%) from the charity stripe.

Chelsie Schweers led Christopher Newport with 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Lauren Gural also scored 17 and grabbed six boards.  Jessica Moore finished with 10.

MBC falls to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in USA South action. CNU improves to 6-2 on the year and 1-0 in USA South play.

The Captains return to action Wednesday when they head to Shenandoah with tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
