MARIETTA, OH – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad rolled to a 4-1 win over Walsh on day two of the Marietta College Tournament Championship match on Sunday.
Tournament MVP Winston Mattheisen scored the first two goals of the game, including the game-winner. His first score came just 1:18 into the start of the game when Mattheisen kicked home a rebound off of a shot from Tyler Clare. His second score came in the 25th minute off of Matt Tengs goal kick. Mattheisen corralled the ball and drilled it into the upper left corner.
Walsh cut the lead in half in the 59th minute off a corner kick but CNU countered with two goals in the final 30 minutes.
Clare scored in the 62nd minute with Brian Tweed assisting. Kenny Huttman accounted for the final goal in the 88th minute, also from Tweed, on a through ball.
Mattheisen, Jimmy Hash, Clare, Kyle Allan and Bryan Davis were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
CNU out-shot Walsh, 24-12. Tengs had five saves in goal.
Walsh falls to 1-3-1 while Christopher Newport improves to 3-1. The Captains return to action Saturday when they take on the College of New Jersey at 6 pm.
