MARIETTA, OH – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad upended Westminster, 3-1, on day one of the Marietta College Classic Saturday.
The Captains jumped on the scoreboard first in the 10th minute when Jimmy Hash sent a cross into the box that was deflected by the Westminster goalkeeper and sent home by Winston Mattheisen.
The Titans Garrett Horvath evened the score at 1-1 in the 14th minute on a penalty kick.
CNU would score two more times in the opening half, including the game-winner by Tyler Clare just 31 seconds after Westminster tied the score. Clare found the back of the net from 10 yards out that went in off the right post.
Kenny Huttman's through ball in the 37th minute found the foot of Kyle Allan who punched it home, which put CNU on top, 3-1.
Christopher Newport out-shot the Titans, 18-14. Matt Tengs had four stops in goal.
The Captains are now 2-1 and return to action Sunday when they play the winner of Marietta and Walsh at 3 pm.
