GEORGETOWN, TX – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad dispatched Southwestern 3-1 Friday evening on day two of the team's trip to Texas.
The Captains left for Texas Thursday and will return late Sunday night.
Tyler Clare put the Captains on the board first when he dribbled through two Southwestern defenders and knocked a lob shot in over the Pirates keeper in the fourth minute.
In the 54th minute, Kyle Allan scored the eventual game-winner when Clare played a ball back to Allan who blistered one through the keeper's hands for a 2-0 lead.
Brian Tweed added an insurance goal in the 59th minute on a shot from the left side into the far corner.
The Pirates scored their goal in the 89th minute off a corner kick.
Christopher Newport out-shot Southwestern, 21-12. Matt Tengs had five saves in goal.
The Pirates fall to 3-6 on the year while CNU improves to 7-2-1. The Captains return to action Sunday when they take on No. 1 ranked Trinity (TX) at 12 pm
