VIRGINIA BEACH – Christopher Newport's men's soccer team defeated the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan by a final score of 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
The Captains wasted no time getting on the board against their Hampton Roads rival, as senior Brian Tweed drew first blood. In the 14th minute, Tweed was awarded a free kick, and with perfect precision he curved it around a wall of Marlin defenders.
VWC would tie the game 15 minutes later, and the score would remain knotted at one as the teams went into halftime.
Then, in the 63rd minute, Tweed was back at it again as he sent a perfect pass to Winston Mattheisen, who headed the ball into the Marlin net for what would turn out to be the game winner.
The Captains out-shot VWC 17-9 and won at Foster Field for the first time since 2001. Meanwhile, Matt Tengs made 2 saves in goal, helping improve CNU's record to 5-1-1 on the season.
The Captains will next travel to Fredericksburg on Saturday to take on Mary. Game time is set for 2pm. Washington University
