#13 Field Hockey Upends Catawba, 4-2

NEWPORT NEWS – Christopher Newport's field hockey team defeated Division II Catawba on Sunday by a final score of 4-2. 

 

The Captains, ranked 13th in the nation, trailed 1-0 early, but would out-score the Indians 4-1 the rest of the way.  After entering halftime tied at 1 goal a piece, CNU poured it on in the 2nd half, knocking three goals into the cage.

 

Senior Ashley Cybulski lead the charge for the Captains, with 5 shots and 2 goals.  She got the Captains on the board in the 33rd minute, knotting the score at 1 before halftime.  Cybulski would score again right out of the gates after halftime, putting the Captains up 2-1 in the 48th minute.

 

Freshman Ali Freudenberg sealed the deal for CNU, scoring the game-winner in the 51st minute.  Then with only 11 seconds to go Katelyn Yandle would tack on one more for the Captains, making the final score 4-2. 

The Captains out-shot the Indians 23-7 on the day as well as overpowering them in penalty corners 17-2.

 

CNU's goalie Elexa Nosunchuck played all 70 minutes and picked up her first win of the season.

 

The Captains improve to 2-3 on the year, and play their third home game of the season on Wednesday at 4:30 against Randolph-Macon. College
