NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad opened the Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic with a 3-1 win over the College of New Jersey Saturday evening.
Winston Mattheisen continued his hot start to his collegiate career as he put the Captains on the board first in the 17th minute off a feed from Brian Lybert. In the 25th minute, Mattheisen flicked a ball behind him right to Nao Masuda who found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. The third CNU goal came in the 28th minute on an own goal.
The Lions scored their only goal with 13 seconds left in the first half.
Christopher Newport out-shot TCNJ, 8-3. Matt Tengs had two saves for the Captains.
CNU improves to 4-1 while the Lions fall to 3-1-1. Christopher Newport returns to action Sunday as they take on New Jersey City, who defeated Methodist, 4-0 in the first game Saturday, at 6 pm.
