NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad started off the 2008 campaign on a positive note with a 2-1 overtime win over Medaille on day one of the 2nd Annual VCAM/CNU Classic Friday night.
The Mavericks got on the board first after the two teams played to a scoreless first half. Eric Schnirel slipped one past Matt Tengs with Gary Broughton assisting in the 64th minute.
Four minutes later, Kyle Allan drove home a loose ball to tie the score.
With the score tied, the two teams were set to play two 10-minute overtimes where the first team to score, wins.
Freshman Winston Mattheisen scored the game winner in the 95th minute off a pass from John Corser to lift the Captains to the win.
CNU out-shot Medaille, 13-5. Tengs had three saves in goal.
The Mavericks fall to 0-1 while Christopher Newport is 1-0. The Captains return to action Saturday, when they host fifth-ranked York (PA) at 7:30 pm. York defeated VA Wesleyan, ranked 14th, 2-0, in the tournament's first game.
