Softball Splits At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's softball squad split a pair of USA South games at Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Hornets took game one, 6-3.

 

SU scored the first six runs of the game, pushing across three in the first, one in the third and two more in the sixth. The Captains scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Katie Moyers was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Margit Severin went 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in. Kristen Nickloy finished 2-for-2.

 

Janet Fairchild pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits to fall to 5-4.

 

CNU took the night-cap, 11-7. The Captains struck first in the top of the first inning with one run, while Shenandoah scored twice in the bottom of the opening frame. Christopher Newport took the lead for good when it scored seven times in the top of the second.

 

After the Captains scored once more in the top of the third, the Hornets scored four in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 9-6, but that would be as close as they would come.

 

Moyers finished 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Audra Underwood went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Severin was 2-for-2 and Jessie Atkinson was 2-for-4. Ashley Mani went 2-for-3.

 

Kristen Bruce picked up her seventh win of the year in relief. She tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowed one run on five hits.

 

Shenandoah is now 23-9 overall and 11-3 in the USA South. The Captains are 25-8-1 on the year and 10-3-1 in the USA South.

 

Christopher Newport returns to action Thursday when they travel to Meredith with start time set for 3 pm.
