Softball Takes Two From Averett

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport swept a softball doubleheader Monday, beating Averett at Captains Park by scores of 9-1 and 5-4.

 

The USA South wins give the Captains a six-game winning streak

CNU broke open a 1-1 game in the opener with a six run fourth inning and ended it in five innings by scoring two more. Megan Morris and Renee Ashworth each knocked in two runs for the Captains and Mary Kennedy was three for three with three bunt singles.

Kristen Bruce pitched all five innings in the opener and allowed just one unearned run while striking out seven. Bruce raised her record to 6-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, errors were the big story. Christopher Newport led 4-0, but committed three errors in the sixth inning and allowed Averett to score four unearned runs to tie the game at four. The Captains then plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an Averett infield error.

Kristen Rowe got the win in relief of Lindsay Kelly in game two and raised her record to 4-2. Kelly allowed four unearned runs in five and one-third inning. Sandra Dennison took the loss in both games for the Cougars and is now 3-17 on the season.

Averett falls to 3-19 overall and 1-11 in the USA South. CNU is now
24-7-1 overall and 9-2-1 in conference play.

The Captains travel to Winchester on Wednesday for a USA South doubleheader with Shenandoah.
