Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's Bonnie Hansen scored the game-winner with a minute left in triple-overtime to lead women's lacrosse to a 15-14 win over Roanoke Sunday afternoon.
The Captains led by as many as five goals in the first half when they lead 8-3 with just under seven minutes left. CNU took a 10-6 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Maroons scored the first four goals to tie the score at 10-10 with 17:58 to go in regulation. From there, the game was back and forth. Roanoke took a 13-12 lead with 5:57 to go in regulation, but Kaitlin Quigley's goal with 2:36 left in the second half tied the score at 13-13.
Overtime rules state that two teams playing from two difference conferences must play two three-minute overtime periods and if the score is still tied, then another three minute period is played, where the first team to score, wins.
RC struck first in the opening overtime but Meghan Harkey knotted the score at 14-14 with 2:23 remaining in the second session. Hansen then put home the game-winner off of a free position shot two minutes into the third overtime period.
Quigley led Christopher Newport with five goals. Brooke Falcke scored four times and assisted on three others. Harkey and Chrissy Rogers both scored two goals and had one assist. Hansen and Natalie Gilbert each finished with one goal. Katie Doherty's five assists set a new school record for assists in a game.
The Maroons out-shot CNU, 39-36. Rachel Giljam picked up her first win in her collegiate career and made 18 stops.
Roanoke falls to 6-7 overall while the Captains improve to 8-5. CNU returns to action Saturday when they host USA South rival Methodist with start time set for 12 pm.
