Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team won game one in dramatic fashion and took game two to sweep Ferrum in a USA South doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.
Taylor Morgan hit a walk-off solo home run to right-centerfield to give the Captains a 2-1 win in game one. Katie Moyers had put CNU on top 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ferrum tied the score in the top of the seventh.
Janet Fairchild started and tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Kristen Rowe picked up the win in relief, walking one and striking out one, to improve to 3-2.
Morgan finished 2-for-3. Margit Severin and Megan Morris both finished with one hit.
The Captains took the night-cap, 8-6.
Christopher Newport scored three times in the opening frame before allowing the Panthers to put four on the scoreboard in the top of the second. CNU responded with two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, 5-4.
The Captains scored three more in the fifth while Ferrum plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Jessie Atkinson finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Moyers and Mary Kennedy both finished 2-for-4. Morris was 1-for-2 with an RBI, three runs scored and two steals.
Sarah Tipton picked up the win in relief, tossing 4 2/3 innings. She gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits, while walking four and striking out one. Rowe got the last two outs of the game, striking out one, earning the save.
Ferrum falls to 10-18 on the year and 4-8 in the USA South. CNU improves to 22-7-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the USA South. The Captains return to the diamond Monday when they host Averett in a rescheduled doubleheader from Saturday. First pitch is 3 pm.
