Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse squad dominated Sewanee Saturday afternoon, winning 19-6.
It was a back and forth first period as the Captains led, 3-2, after one. CNU, however, dominated the final 45 minutes of play.
After the Tigers tied the score at 3-3 three minutes into the start of the second quarter, Christopher Newport reeled off 11 straight goals to lead 14-3 with 2:20 left in the third period.
Sewanee scored just before the end of the third and CNU scored five more times in the final stanza of play.
Ryan Merrell led the Captains with five goals. Jon Ims scored four times and finished with two assists. Matt Gleisner scored three goals and had one assist. Patrick Cavanaugh totaled two goals and two helpers. Ray Fitzgerald finished with one goal and two assists.
Rob Duca, Chris Quigley, Danny Huston, and Daniel Elbe each scored once. Reed Ruddy, Nick Cavallaro, and Jackson Kibler all finished with one assist.
Justin King's five assists set a new school record for assists in a game.
CNU out-shot Sewanee, 40-19. Matt Miller recorded his seventh win of the year in the cage and made two stops. Ray Ralph and Brendan Tully also saw time in goal, and both made two saves.
The Tigers fall to 3-6 on the year. Christopher Newport improves to 7-5. The Captains return to action next Saturday when they travel to Greensboro with face-off set for 1 pm.
